Tenure Requirements
- Have held a HR or HC licence for at least one year. Any time you've spent on a P2 HR licence counts, but you can't practice driving an MC vehicle, or upgrade to an MC licence until you hold a full class HR or HC licence.
What are the RMS Requirements to get your MC Licence?
Prior to attending a Multi-Combination Competency Based Assessment Course, applicants must attend an RMS/Service NSW office to:
- Provide a current photo licence or Proof of Identity which meet RMS requirements
- Complete a Licence Application Form for the National Heavy Vehicle Driver Licensing Scheme
- Provide a completed medical report (supplied by the RMS).
- Pass a combination knowledge test (visit the web on www.rms.nsw.gov.au for a practice test) The cost of the knowledge test is $49
- You can also view the Heavy Vehicle Driver’s Handbook and Road User’s Handbook on www.rms.nsw.gov.au, or these may be purchased through the RMS at a cost of $13 each.
- Pass an eyesight test

Previous Experience
There are no prerequisites with regard to driving experience, however the 1-day course is not recommended for people with little or no experience with a semi-trailer.
The standards expected to obtain your MC qualification are quite rigid. Attending this course does not guarantee a licence. Full compliance to the RMS standards must be achieved.
Course Structure
The one-day course is run as a 1:1 instructor to student ratio. There is classroom training, prestart checks, 70-meter-long reverse, coupling and uncoupling of rear trailer, load restraints as well as on road training and assessment.
